Dante Domain Manager (DDM) is supplied as an ISO file that contains both the DDM application and its Linux operating system. To run DDM on Microsoft Hyper-V, you create a new virtual machine (VM) and install DDM from the ISO.
Important: we recommend installing DDM on server-grade hardware. Running DDM on a desktop or laptop (Windows, macOS or Linux) may not be suitable for a production environment or permanent installation.
Before you start
- Download the DDM ISO from Software Downloads.
- AVX support (DDM 1.9 and later): the host CPU must support the AVX instruction set, and Hyper-V must pass it through to the VM. See The AVX instruction requirements for DDM.
- Upgrading from DDM 1.6 or earlier? You need a fresh install and a configuration restore. See the DDM 1.7+ Install Guide before you begin.
VM requirements
Size the VM for your DDM edition and the number of devices in your system:
| DDM edition | CPUs | RAM | Disk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold | 2 | 4 GB | 20 GB |
| Platinum | 2 | 8 GB | 20 GB |
| More than 200 devices | 3 | 16 GB recommended | 30 GB |
The physical host must meet these requirements as well as Microsoft's Hyper-V requirements, with extra capacity for the host operating system and any other applications.
Step 1: Enable Hyper-V
Skip this step if Hyper-V is already enabled.
Windows Server
- In Server Manager, click Manage > Add Roles and Features.
- On Installation Type, select Role-based or feature-based installation and click Next.
- On Server Selection, select the server to add Hyper-V to.
- On Server Roles, select Hyper-V. In the pop-up, click Add Features, then click Next.
- On Features, don't change anything. Click Next.
- On Confirmation, click Install.
- When the installation finishes, click Close.
Windows 10 or 11 (not recommended for production)
Hyper-V needs Windows Pro, Enterprise or Education (not Home), a 64-bit processor with Second Level Address Translation (SLAT), and CPU virtualisation support (VT-x on Intel). The host needs more than 4 GB of memory in total to run DDM.
- Open Turn Windows features on or off (search for it from the Start menu).
- Select Hyper-V and click OK.
- Restart your computer when prompted.
Step 2: Create the virtual machine
- Open Hyper-V Manager (not Hyper-V Quick Create).
- Click Connect to Server, select Local computer (if you're installing DDM on this machine) and click OK.
- Click New > Virtual Machine.
- Specify Name and Location: enter a name for the VM and click Next.
- Specify Generation: select Generation 1 and click Next.
- Assign Memory: enter the memory for your DDM edition (see VM requirements) and click Next.
- Configure Networking: select a virtual switch connected to your Dante network and click Next. If you don't have one, create an external virtual switch for the network adapter on your Dante network in Virtual Switch Manager, then add it to the VM in its Settings.
- Connect Virtual Hard Disk: select Create a virtual hard disk, set the size for your DDM edition and click Next.
- Installation Options: select Install an operating system from a bootable CD/DVD-ROM, select Image file (.iso), browse to the DDM ISO and click Next.
- Review the summary and click Finish.
- Select the new VM and click Settings. Under Processor, set the Number of virtual processors for your DDM edition. Click Apply, then OK.
Step 3: Install DDM
- Select the VM, click Connect, then click Start in the console window.
- On the DDM installation screen, make sure Install Dante Domain Manager is highlighted and press Enter. This erases all data on the VM's disk.
- Wait for the Installation Complete message. Don't press Enter as the screen suggests. Instead, click the Shut Down button in the console, so the VM doesn't start the installer again.
- Open the VM's Settings, select DVD Drive and change the media to None. Click Apply, then OK.
- Click Start to boot the VM.
- After it starts, the DDM appliance menu shows the Dante network interface and the VM's IP address. Make any network changes you need in the menu.
- In a web browser, go to the IP address shown and follow the steps to set up and license DDM.
For more on the appliance menu and licensing, see the Dante Domain Manager User Guide.
